ISO 19650 is a series of standards about information management using BIM. It is aimed at organizing information across the life cycle of built assets, including planning, design, engineering, construction, operation, maintenance, refurbishment, and end of life.
In plain language, ISO 19650 is less about software and more about trust. It asks teams to define information requirements, responsibilities, delivery processes, status, revision, review, and exchange rules so that project information can be created and used with confidence.
A central idea is that information moves through managed states. Work may begin privately in progress, then be shared for coordination, then published or accepted for a defined purpose. The exact setup depends on the project, but the principle is that status should be visible and controlled.
The standard also connects to the common data environment idea: a managed place and process for collecting, managing, and distributing project information. For many teams, the CDE is where information status, revisions, approvals, and access rules become practical.
As of 27 September 2026, ISO lists ISO 19650-1:2018 as published and current, while also showing ISO/DIS 19650-1, the draft second edition, under development at stage 40.93 (decision for a new DIS ballot) and expected to replace it. Because standards status can change, this article is reviewed once a month.
A collaboration platform is not a certification tool for ISO 19650. It can still support ISO-style information management when controlled records, review actions, schedules, structured registers, process maps, and shared project context are handled consistently.
